How I Style My Hair + Favorite Products

Let me start off by saying that I have A LOT of hair. The strands are relatively thin but the amount and layers of hair that I have make it pretty thick. I don't have a very extensive routine when it comes to my hair, but I do make sure to keep it healthy and styled to my liking. The products that I use really help in keeping my hair looking nice and under control. So without further ado, here's my "hair" spiel:

1. I always make sure to get my hair trimmed every 8 weeks or so. I use a lot of heat on it, so I have to make sure I get the dead ends cut off regularly. I always get long layers cut into my hair to frame my face.

2. As far as color goes, I get that done professionally at Ulta Beauty Salon. My hair stylist always does an amazing job and never fails to impress me.

3. For shampoo and conditioner, I always mix it up because my hair tends to "get used to" certain products. In my opinion, the best brands for shampoo/conditoner are Pureology, Redken, and AG. If you are on a budget, I recommend the OGX brand. The main thing I look for in shampoo and conditioner is sulfate free and  low levels of silicone.

4. After I wash my hair, I always comb it out and apply Redken's One United leave in product. This product does everything it claims to do and I will always, always continue to repurchase this. It makes my hair soft, reduces static/frizz, and acts as a heat protestant.

5. If I plan on letting my hair air dry I also use Redken's Just Right Cream. It helps reduce the amount of time it takes my hair to dry and adds texture to my natural style.

6. After my hair is dry, I either straighten or curl it. The hair straightener and curling wand I use are made by the same brand and I really love them. When curling my hair, I wrap medium sized sections around the wand to create loose waves. When straightening my hair, I like to use AG's Firewall to add extra heat protection and to give my hair a sleek look.

7. After my hair is styled, I usually apply some type of oil to give it softness and shine. I highly recommend Macadamia Oil and Argan Oil

8. On days that I don't wash my hair, I use Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Dry Shampoo

And that's pretty much it! I don't like to use tons of product on my hair at once because it tends to weigh it down. I hope you gained something from this post and let me know some of your hair tips in the comments below!

Own Your Stripes

Happy Wednesday everyone! I'm so excited to be sharing this post today because the pictures for it turned out beautifully (Photo creds to my friend Alison). Out of all the outfits I've ever worn, this is definitely one of my favorites. I've always been very "safe" when it comes to fashion and I rarely step outside my comfort zone with it. However, I just had to style these awesome pants from H&M and I'm so glad I did. Anything with vertical stripes is going to elongate your body and give the illusion of a slimmer appearance, which is why my legs look miles long (jokes on you, I'm only 5'5 lol) Wide leg pants are also a trend for this season, as I've mentioned in my Spring Fashion Favorites Guide. Because these pants are so flowy and loose, I paired them with a tighter bralette top to balance out the look. I then finished off the outfit with my go-to heeled sandals and structured black bag. I really enjoyed putting together this outfit and let me know what you think in the comments below!

How Fashion Changed My Life

Within the last 4 years or so, my fashion sense and style has changed quite drastically. Surprisingly enough, fashion wasn't always an interest of mine; which is crazy to think about because now I can't imagine my life without it. It has given me motivation and confidence in so many different ways, and has driven me to take a path that could really shape my life.

In my early years of high school, I never really had a specific "style." I tended to look at what other girls were wearing and basically followed the crowd. A typical everyday outfit for me would have consisted of some type of graphic t-shirt from Aeropostale, skinny jeans, and Ugg boots. Looking back on it now, it makes me cringe because all I did was copy what everyone else was doing. I had no sense of individuality or creativity. Fortunately, all of that finally changed during my junior year of high school.

One day, I happened to be scrolling through pictures of One Direction (yes, I'm still a huge fan) and stumbled upon one that was taken of  Louis Tomlinson's girlfriend, Eleanor Calder. My immediate, first thought when I saw her was, "Wow, this girl really knows fashion." That's when I took a look at my style and realized, "Oh wait, I don't really have one."

I started to follow Tumblr blogs that were dedicated to Eleanor's style. They posted about the outfits she wore and even created looks that were inspired by her. They really helped me develop a creative eye for styling outfits and taught me how to pull inspiration from others without "copying" them.

As time passed, I really started to develop a strong interest in fashion and my sense of style slowly began to improve. I no longer copied other girls' outfits because I now knew how to create my own. It made me feel confident knowing that I knew how to put together great outfits without having to constantly base it off of what others were wearing. In fact, my love for fashion grew so much that I decided I wanted to make a career out of it. After high school, I went to business school and majored in Merchandising so I could learn about the business side of fashion. My ambition to get through college and start a career has developed immensely because of my love for it.

Today, fashion impacts my life now more than ever. I currently work as a sales associate at H&M, so I'm constantly surrounded by all things involving clothing and business. No, it's not the most glamorous job out there and it doesn't pay six figures; but I'm a firm believer in that everyone has to start somewhere and working in retail is great experience for any business related job (especially fashion).

I have decided that blogging is the career path I want to take. It allows me to express my love for fashion and beauty through pictures and words which is amazing. I still pull a lot of inspiration from Eleanor; however I have picked up new inspirations along the way as well. For example, fellow blogger Florencia Rhodi of Flo Loves Clothes is a huge inspiration to me and I'm always taking pointers from her. A few others include Tess Christine, Bethany Mota, Arielle Charnas (SomethingNavy), Emily Ratajkowski and Kendall Jenner. When it comes to makeup, I take inspiration from the outfits I wear and coordinate the looks to go hand in hand.

All in all, fashion has really changed my life for the better. I went from copying other people's outfits to drawing inspiration from public figures and developing my own, unique style. My confidence has improved so much because I can use my personal style to express who I truly am. It has solidified a career path for me; something I never really had before I fell in love with fashion. I know it sounds cheesy as hell but I can honestly say that without fashion, I don't know who or where I'd be today.

Fashion Favorites Guide: Spring/Summer 2017 Trends

The warm weather that spring and summer bring is finally here, so I felt inspired to put together a guide of my favorite trends for this season. Some of these trends have been around for awhile, while others have recently popped up into the fashion world. I don't know about you, but I'm definitely a girl on a budget, so most of the products I included are pretty affordable. I also put together a few outfits so you could visualize how these pieces can be styled. You can certainly expect to see some of these in upcoming outfit posts on Satin Starlight and you can shop all of my favorites below!
