Own Your Stripes

Happy Wednesday everyone! I'm so excited to be sharing this post today because the pictures for it turned out beautifully (Photo creds to my friend Alison). Out of all the outfits I've ever worn, this is definitely one of my favorites. I've always been very "safe" when it comes to fashion and I rarely step outside my comfort zone with it. However, I just had to style these awesome pants from H&M and I'm so glad I did. Anything with vertical stripes is going to elongate your body and give the illusion of a slimmer appearance, which is why my legs look miles long (jokes on you, I'm only 5'5 lol) Wide leg pants are also a trend for this season, as I've mentioned in my Spring Fashion Favorites Guide. Because these pants are so flowy and loose, I paired them with a tighter bralette top to balance out the look. I then finished off the outfit with my go-to heeled sandals and structured black bag. I really enjoyed putting together this outfit and let me know what you think in the comments below!

How Fashion Changed My Life

Within the last 4 years or so, my fashion sense and style has changed quite drastically. Surprisingly enough, fashion wasn't always an interest of mine; which is crazy to think about because now I can't imagine my life without it. It has given me motivation and confidence in so many different ways, and has driven me to take a path that could really shape my life.

In my early years of high school, I never really had a specific "style." I tended to look at what other girls were wearing and basically followed the crowd. A typical everyday outfit for me would have consisted of some type of graphic t-shirt from Aeropostale, skinny jeans, and Ugg boots. Looking back on it now, it makes me cringe because all I did was copy what everyone else was doing. I had no sense of individuality or creativity. Fortunately, all of that finally changed during my junior year of high school.

One day, I happened to be scrolling through pictures of One Direction (yes, I'm still a huge fan) and stumbled upon one that was taken of  Louis Tomlinson's girlfriend, Eleanor Calder. My immediate, first thought when I saw her was, "Wow, this girl really knows fashion." That's when I took a look at my style and realized, "Oh wait, I don't really have one."

I started to follow Tumblr blogs that were dedicated to Eleanor's style. They posted about the outfits she wore and even created looks that were inspired by her. They really helped me develop a creative eye for styling outfits and taught me how to pull inspiration from others without "copying" them.

As time passed, I really started to develop a strong interest in fashion and my sense of style slowly began to improve. I no longer copied other girls' outfits because I now knew how to create my own. It made me feel confident knowing that I knew how to put together great outfits without having to constantly base it off of what others were wearing. In fact, my love for fashion grew so much that I decided I wanted to make a career out of it. After high school, I went to business school and majored in Merchandising so I could learn about the business side of fashion. My ambition to get through college and start a career has developed immensely because of my love for it.

Today, fashion impacts my life now more than ever. I currently work as a sales associate at H&M, so I'm constantly surrounded by all things involving clothing and business. No, it's not the most glamorous job out there and it doesn't pay six figures; but I'm a firm believer in that everyone has to start somewhere and working in retail is great experience for any business related job (especially fashion).

I have decided that blogging is the career path I want to take. It allows me to express my love for fashion and beauty through pictures and words which is amazing. I still pull a lot of inspiration from Eleanor; however I have picked up new inspirations along the way as well. For example, fellow blogger Florencia Rhodi of Flo Loves Clothes is a huge inspiration to me and I'm always taking pointers from her. A few others include Tess Christine, Bethany Mota, Arielle Charnas (SomethingNavy), Emily Ratajkowski and Kendall Jenner. When it comes to makeup, I take inspiration from the outfits I wear and coordinate the looks to go hand in hand.

All in all, fashion has really changed my life for the better. I went from copying other people's outfits to drawing inspiration from public figures and developing my own, unique style. My confidence has improved so much because I can use my personal style to express who I truly am. It has solidified a career path for me; something I never really had before I fell in love with fashion. I know it sounds cheesy as hell but I can honestly say that without fashion, I don't know who or where I'd be today.

Fashion Favorites Guide: Spring/Summer 2017 Trends

The warm weather that spring and summer bring is finally here, so I felt inspired to put together a guide of my favorite trends for this season. Some of these trends have been around for awhile, while others have recently popped up into the fashion world. I don't know about you, but I'm definitely a girl on a budget, so most of the products I included are pretty affordable. I also put together a few outfits so you could visualize how these pieces can be styled. You can certainly expect to see some of these in upcoming outfit posts on Satin Starlight and you can shop all of my favorites below!

What Saved My Skin + My Current Skincare Routine

I am a firm believer in that taking care of your skin is just as important as eating healthy and exercising. Your skin is the largest organ on your body and if you don't take care of it, you might regret it later in life and you may even be faced with health problems. Before I talk about the products that help keep my skin in check, let me first discuss my skin's background and history.

Throughout middle school and high school, I had to deal with pretty severe acne. I tried tons of over the counter skincare regimens such as Proactiv and AcneFree, but nothing worked. I finally started seeing a dermatologist who prescribed me oral acne medication and a topical acne gel. I used those for about a year and my skin cleared up enough to the point where I didn't need the medication anymore.

Although my acne breakouts calmed down a lot, I was left with a decent amount of scarring. On top of that, I have pretty oily skin and large pores. It took me quite awhile, but I think I've finally found the products that really help my skin. Some of these products are on the pricey side, but it is well worth it for the results they deliver.

My A.M. Routine

1. I wash my face using my hands and the Aveeno Positively Radiant Brightening Cleanser. I love this cleanser because it makes my skin feel clean and really smooth.
2. Before I apply my makeup, I use the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. Gel  based moisturizers are ideal for those with oily skin, and I've been using this one for years. It gives my skin the moisture it needs without overdoing it and making my oily skin worse.

My morning routine is very simple and short. I usually don't have a ton of time in the morning, so I only use the bare essentials. However, my night routine is slightly more extensive.

My P.M. Routine

1. I remove my makeup using the Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Oil. Most oil based makeup removers make me breakout, but fortunately this one doesn't do that at all. It does an amazing job of taking all of my makeup off.
2. I use my Clarisonic Mia2 when washing my face at night. The Clarisonic is a skin cleansing system that gently, yet deeply cleanses the skin, and removes six times more makeup and dirt than manual cleansing. I have recognized a huge difference in my skin after using this for the past 2 years. You need to replace the brush head every 3 months, and I usually use the Deep Pore and Acne ones.
The face cleanser I use every night is the Biore Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser. This product does a really great job at getting deep down and removing all of the left over makeup, dirt, and oil in my pores. I have found that charcoal based products help clear up and keep away any breakouts.
3. After I wash my face, I will use some sort of mask. Lately, I have really been loving the Dr. Dennis Gross Clarifying Colloidal Sulfur Mask. It specifically targets acne, oiliness, and redness. I will use this about 3 times a week and I usually leave this on my skin for about 10 minutes and rinse it off. If my skin is in a really bad spot, I will leave this mask on overnight and rinse it off in the morning. The first time I used this, I had a pretty bad breakout. I left it on overnight and in the morning, the redness had diminished a lot and my acne spots had decreased more than half of their size! I highly recommend this product to anyone with skin concerns similar to mine.
3. After I rinse off my mask/wash my face, I will then apply a toner using a cotton round. My absolute favorite is the Kate Somerville Clarifying Treatment Toner. This toner acts as a treatment to fight acne breakouts and keep oiliness at bay. It also claims to lighten discoloration from acne scarring (yes please!). Toners are essential because they help balance the ph levels in your skin.
4. If my skin is feeling sightly drier than usual, I will use my Clinique moisturizer following the toner.

And there you have it. I have found that this regimen really helps my skin and I have noticed that my acne scarring is diminishing more and more over time. I am still not 100% happy with how my skin looks, but I have come a really long way and I know that it will only get better If I keep up with my regimen. Obviously my skincare routine won't work for everyone, but hopefully it gives you some idea of how to take care of your skin and the types of products you need. Let me know what your favorite skincare products are in the comments below!
